These felted wool dolls are handmade in Kyrgyzstan.
Erkebu Djumagulova designs the dolls. She grew up in a family of artisans and has dreamt since early childhood of creating products that could bring her local cultural traditions to a broader customer base. Towards that end, Erkebu opened "Erke Kuurchak," a craft workshop, in 2006 specializing in traditional style dolls, among other things.
Over 30 years of work Erkebu has won numerous awards nationally and internationally including the Kyrgyz Women's Congress international medal for the leadership, the UNESCO award "Sign of Excellence" and others. She also employs and trains dozens of Kyrgyz women so that they can support themselves and their family while simultaneously preserving their cultural heritage.
