Saltillo weaving began in colonial Mexico through a blending of Indigenous and Spanish textile traditions. In 1591, Indigenous Tlaxcalan families from central Mexico were relocated north to establish a community beside Saltillo. They brought their knowledge of spinning, dyeing and loom weaving. Spanish settlers had introduced sheep, wool and European weaving techniques. Over time, these traditions combines to create a distinctive woolen garment, the Saltillo serape. By the late 1700s and 1800s, Saltillo weavers became famous for extremely fine, tightly woven wool, a large central diamond or medallion and bright natural dyes.
